VELMA SKEHAR (nee HNATIUK) April 17, 1928 - June 02, 2014 It is with great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our Mother, Baba, Babcha and Bacha at Seven Oaks Hospital on June 02, 2014 at the age of 86. Velma was predeceased by her husband Harry, parents, Nicholas and Annie Hnatiuk, brothers, Mike, Bill, Thomas, Peter, Alex, Maurice, sisters, Mary, Marlene, sisters-in-law, Anita, Anne, Josie, brothers-in-law, Alex Deczycia, Laurence Rybock, and George Gulay. She is survived by brothers, Nicholas and Harry (Sylvia) and sisters, Ollie and Elsie. Velma will be lovingly remembered by her children Pat (Russ), Tom (Vicki), Arlene (Rick), and Connie. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Rebecca (Brian), Samantha (Allan), Steven (Kate-Lyn), Kyle, Breanne, the "whoop and holler" boys Blake and Chase and our newest addition Leanne. Velma was born in Gilbert Plains, MB where she resided and worked on the family farm until she moved to Winnipeg. She was employed as a seamstress all her life. In Winnipeg, she met the love of her life, Harry. They were married on May 22, 1954 and raised four children. Velma enjoyed sewing, embroidery, knitting and crocheting. She was always working on something for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening and shared the fruits of her labour with her family. Velma was a great cook and baker. No one ever left her place hungry. Velma, like Harry, enjoyed bowling, fishing and travelling. Many family trips were taken to Toronto, Edmonton, and Vancouver. Velma's greatest joy was spending quality time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was involved and supported their activities from Ukrainian dance concerts to hockey and baseball games. Velma will be missed by her numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the nursing staff on the 5th floor, Units 1 and 3. A very special thank you to Dr. Fatoye for his kindness and compassion. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at St. Mary the Protectress Church, 820 Burrows Ave. at 10:00 a.m. with the Very Fr. Alexandr Harkavyi officiating. Interment after the service at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
